Freedom, Without Qualification Is An Important Piece Of ``...
  Freedom is such an important piece of ââ¬Å"Americanaâ⬠ that everyone, inside or outside of the United States, believes they know what the word means; yet when asked to define it, the word retreats to the abstract nothingness of intangible shadows. Freedomââ¬â¢s complicated nature becomes an important topic when comparing the free and enslaved black women in three antebellum narratives: Harriet Jacobsââ¬â¢s Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Melton A. McLaurinââ¬â¢s Celia, a Slave, and Harriet E. Wilsonââ¬â¢s Our Nig. Freedom is obviously preferable to enslavementââ¬âthis fact is indisputable. Millions of male and female slaves risked their lives to escape slavery; no free person of color wanted to be enslaved. However, merely saying ââ¬Å"freedomâ⬠ without qualification is a misnomer, for it is not a monolithic idea. The United States did not have a single group of free peopleââ¬âfree Black women were (and still are) treated differently from White    women. Thus, the debate of whether free women of color and female slaves were more different than similar is a question of whether slavery, which differentiated free women of color from female slaves, was more pervasive than racism, which separated free women of color and White females. By comparing externalist and internalist methods of understanding freedomââ¬ânamely, freedom from violence and free willââ¬âbetween White women, free women of color and enslaved women, this paper concludes that racism trumped the differences created by slavery.
